Tips for Reading Books

First, ask yourself what do you want to accomplish with this book. This step allows you to establish a purpose. Then follow these steps:

  • Find out who the author is, and the date of publication.
  • Read preface and table of contents.
  • Look at the diagrams and pictures.
  • Skim the first and last chapters. This may give you all the information you need.
  • Read the first and last chapters and skim the intervening chapters.
  • Go into the glossary, index as needed.

When you skim and select certain context for reading, you are likely to get the information you need. This method is faster and more effective than to read from cover to cover. After all, you are more interested in information that is essential to your purpose.
